Cocoa extract (also referred to as cocoa polyphenolics) is derived from cocoa seeds as a bitter bulk ingredient for commercial usage and supplementation. Supplementing cocoa extract or eating dark chocolate is linked to better blood flow and improved insulin sensitivity.

In general, the phrase "cocoa extract" refers to the collection of polyphenols found in dark chocolate which may confer health benefits.

Cocoa extract refers to the polyphenolics or 'flavonoids' usually derived from the seeds of the plant which is eventually used to make chocolate.

These flavonoids are the molecules that mediate the vast majority of health benefits associated with chocolate consumption.

What Is Cocoa Extract

Cocoa extract is derived from cocoa seeds as a bitter bulk ingredient for commercial usage and supplementation.

Most of the polyphenols in cocoa are flavonoids, specifically the subset known as flavanols, and so the terms cocoa flavonoids and cocoa flavanols are sometimes used interchangeably with the cocoa extract.

These compounds include also procyanidins and (-)-epicatechin.

Origin and Overview

Cocoa extract refers to the polyphenolics or 'flavonoids' usually derived from the seeds of the plant which is eventually used to make chocolate.

These flavonoids are the molecules that mediate the vast majority of health benefits associated with chocolate consumption.

What Are the Benefits of Cocoa Powder and Cocoa Extract

  • Supplementing cocoa extract or eating dark chocolate is linked to better blood flow and improved insulin sensitivity.
  • When (-)-epicatechin is absorbed by the body, it activates an insulin signaling pathway, which causes a mild increase in glucose uptake. Increased glucose uptake means the body is able to take in sugar from the blood more effectively.
  • Supplementing (-)-epicatechin also increase the production of Nitric Oxide, a molecule that widens blood vessels and improves blood flow.

Direct Side Effects

Eating cocoa is safe for most people. Cocoa contains caffeine and related chemicals.

Eating large amounts might cause caffeine-related side effects such as nervousness, increased urination, sleeplessness, and a fast heartbeat.
