Best Pueraria Mirifica (White Kwao Krua) Supplements Explained

Pueraria Mirifica is also called Kwao Krua or more specifically White Kwao Krua. The name "Mirifica" comes from the Latin word "miracle" and means "miracle, wonder."

Pueraria is used by women and the effect is shown as normalization of the hormones and lowering of estradiol, improvement of the vasomotor symptoms, regulation of the lipoproteins and improvement of mood and depression.

The herb contains classical phytoestrogens like soy isoflavones, but also another class of phytoestrogens, called chromenes. The herb is highly estrogenic due to these active substances and that has been found long ago in 1952.

Men are not recommended to take this herb because it can increase their estrogen activity and negatively affect the libido and the percentage of body fat. Men are recommended herbs such as Maca, Tribulus Terrestris, Ginseng, and Rhodiola.

What Is Pueraria Mirifica

Pueraria Mirifica is also called Kwao Krua or more specifically White Kwao Krua. In fact, it is one of three herbs with a similar name. The other two herbs are Red Kwao Krua (Butea Superba) and Black Kwao Krua (Mucuna collection).

This herb is often mistaken with the Kudzu root (Pueraria lobata), but they are fundamentally different herbs by their nature. The name "Mirifica" comes from the Latin word "miracle" and means "miracle, wonder."

The composition of Pueraria is extremely impressive. The herb contains classical phytoestrogens like soy isoflavones, but also another class of phytoestrogens, called chromenes.

The herb is highly estrogenic due to these active substances and that has been found long ago in 1952.

The Main Components of the Herb Are

  • Chromenes, which are divided into miroestrol, deoxymiroestrol, and isomiroestrol, as miroestrol is the most active ingredient, while deoxymiroestrol has a stronger estrogen activity than the estrogen itself;
  • The isoflavone puerarin (glucoside of genistein) and the soy isoflavones daidzein and genistein. The total mass of the isoflavones constitutes 8.4-10.2% of the dry weight of the herb;
  • Kwakhurin – isoflavone that has a weaker estrogen activity;
  • Other glycosides and isoflavones as pterocarpan, coumestrol, tuberosin, mirificin, and spinasterol;
  • Polysaccharides (73%).

How Does Pueraria Mirifica Work

The metabolism of the active ingredients in Pueraria has been studied only in-vitro. The observations at this stage have found that none of the active ingredients in the herb has a direct effect on the estrogen activity.

The cellular metabolites of the active ingredients are active, as their metabolism is influenced by many factors. Briefly, the active ingredient in the herb is a parent molecule, which forms another molecule that shows a potent metabolic effect.

Pueraria does not show any metabolic activity in the presence of yeast but should have strong metabolic activity in the presence of human enzymes.

It has been found that the metabolism of the active ingredients in Pueraria can be enhanced with the use of S9 fraction (a product from organic tissue).

Potential and Proven Benefits on People

  • Inhibition of the menopause symptoms. The effect is shown as normalization of the hormones and lowering of estradiol, improvement of the vasomotor symptoms, regulation of the lipoproteins and improvement of mood and depression. The results are measured according to the Green Climacteric Scale. A study has indicated potency equal to an estrogen therapy;
  • Improvement of the lipoprotein profile in women in menopause. The HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and apolipoprotein A get increased, while the LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and apolipoprotein B get drastically decreased. The balance between bad and good cholesterol shows a significant improvement;
  • Reduction of the alkaline phosphatase in the bones, suggesting a significant improvement in their strength. There have been no observations in the study on the mineral concentration in the bones;
  • A significant decrease in the vaginal dryness and improvement of the maturation index.

How to Take Pueraria Mirifica

The herb is recommended for use only by women. Preliminary data have found that even daily doses of 25-50 mg may be effective.

We do not recommend the exceeding of the daily dose of 500 mg. It is enough to take the herb once daily with breakfast.

Contraindications and Side Effects

Preliminary data suggest that Pueraria Mirifica is extremely effective as estrogen therapy. At this stage, however, there is no evidence that it is safer than traditional estrogen therapy.

Because of its strong estrogen activity, Pueraria carries the same risks as estrogen therapy. It is not recommended for people with a high risk of uterine or breast cancer, as well as to individuals undergoing these forms of cancer.

Men are not recommended to take this herb because it can increase their estrogen activity and negatively affect the libido and the percentage of body fat. Men are recommended herbs such as Maca, Tribulus Terrestris, Ginseng, and Rhodiola.

It is believed that Pueraria is not a toxic herb. Doses up to 50 mg show zero toxicity. Similar results can be seen with the long-term use of 100 mg a day for a period of 6 months.

How to Combine the Herb

Due to the high estrogen activity and little-detailed research, we would not recommend Pueraria to be combined with other herbs that affect the female hormones.

This category includes Black Cohosh, Vitex agnus castus, and Red clover. We also do not recommend the use of this herb during traditional estrogen therapy.

The herb can be used with common health agents, such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as you only need to be careful with the amount of flaxseed oil. Minerals such as zinc and magnesium can be freely taken.

Where Can We Find Pueraria Mirifica

Pueraria is sold only as a dietary supplement. At this stage, it is easier to find the herb as capsules and not the whole herb in the form of powder or in raw condition.

Specialized extracts are hard to find. Pueraria is commonly sold as a powder, as the concentration in a capsule varies between 150 and 500 mg.

Pueraria can be rarely found in complex formulas that stimulate the female sex hormones or in formulas for menopause treatment, as in Bulgaria such formulas are not to be found.
